The Marines have landed in Gotham, but not everyone wants to
be saved by them.
Jensen and Vendetti bring us another tie-in to the Zero Year
arc. And while it is again superfluous to the main event, and Batman is
non-existent (two panels don’t count) this is a good character study of John
Stewart.
As we juggle both the past and the present, we see who John
was, is and will become.
The art is a little patchy but overall a nice fit for the
story.

Not too much actually happens in this story but the
character moments for John and how he was influenced by both the mother and her
parents save it.
Basically, the marines go to the main Gotham stadium
(Seaside Coliseum) and are met with resistance from a group led by Anarky. They
are captured but manage to escape and overwhelm Anarky, through the villain
escapes.
And in the past pieces, John is told of his maternal
grandparents’ struggle against the ‘system’ and how it influences his response
to Anarky.
There are a few good beats, like Stewart able to use his
surroundings to his advantage and his loyalty to an ideal at all costs (foreshadowing
his controversial record as a Green Lantern).
But overall, there is nothing here we don’t know before.
Anarky suffers from bland villain syndrome and the difficulties with this
character continues.

A story unnecessary for both Zero Year and Green Lantern Corps, it does shed some more light on John Stewart.
So, I give it 6.0 out of 10.
+Some good character moments from John Stewart
+The flashbacks were done well
-The art was hit and miss for me
-Anarky again misused
-Did we need this?
