Spider-Gwen #3 Review

Me, myself and someone else…………..

Gwen Stacy continues to go through the dilemma of who she is, even as adversaries attack from all corners.

Robbi Rodriguez is the star here, as he balances moments of calm vs action very well. Jason Latour is a little lacking here, so Robbi’s role attains more importance.

SPOILERS FOLLOW…………

Gwen decides to pay a visit to her dad, who now more than ever is worried about her safety. He asks her to quit while she’s ahead, but Gwen states that it isn’t Spider-Woman that’s the problem, it’s Gwen Stacy.

But quality time goes bye-bye quickly as the Vulture attacks the Stacy household. Thankfully he doesn’t realize Gwen and Spider-Woman is the same person, only attacking from what he saw – Spider-Woman saving Captain George Stacy.

Gwen though suits up and battles Toomes, only to take in a large dose of a nerve gas in the Vulture’s arsenal. Despite being hurt, Stacy manages to shoot one of Toomes’ wings – rendering him flightless.

Gwen, even in her intoxicated state, manages to render Toomes unconscious, but she’s no match for an armored up Frank Castle. Castle gains the upper hand quickly, but is shocked when he sees a teenage girl under the mask – giving Gwen enough time to slip away.

Even as Ben Parker (here apparently next door neighbors ala the Watsons and Parkers in the regular universe) takes Captain Stacy in to see May Parker for his head wound, Gwen quietly stands in Peter’s empty room.

We seem to be delving into an integral part of this universe’s timeline, namely Peter Parker’s death and its impact on this world’s Gwen Stacy. Peter died trying to become someone like Gwen, and can be regarded as her Uncle Ben.

It will be intriguing to see the Parkers for the first time in this universe. And I think Gwen may just have found another ally, as Castle learning about her is sure to ring alarm bells as to his moves regarding Spider-Woman.

As for the Kingpin and the Vulture, while I’m okay with Toomes being incarcerated for now, I would like some follow-up with Matt ‘Right-Hand Man’ Murdock pursuing Gwen. Maybe then we’ll learn of their endgame for her.

SPOILERS END……………..

This is an emotion heavy issue, but not without some kinetic moments. Rodriguez is able to use faces and environments to convey some deep moments quite well.

Latour starts slow and unsteadily, but settles into the groove pretty quick. But Rodriguez is the main star of this show.

So, I give it 8.5 out of 10.

+Some great visuals
+Emotion heavy moments done right
+Great character moments
+The ending

-Slow unsteady start with some clunky dialogues
