Green Lantern New Guardians #28 Review

If there were no God, it would be necessary to invent Him.

We enter the much anticipated Godkillers arc asking this very question as we witness the ‘Gods’ of different planets and the team hunting them down.

Kyle is learning some hard lessons here as he continues his journey of enlightenment alongside Star Sapphire Carol Ferris and the New Guardians.

Jordan is able to carve out his own niche as he continues building the DC universe here and it’s going into uncharted yet somewhat familiar surroundings.

The art by Walker is good enough for this intergalatactic tourney.

SPOILERS FOLLOW……………

The cover shows a figure that looks awefully like Orion of the New Gods. Yes, it's not him but even......

We first journey to sector 169 where sacrifices are being chosen for a ‘god’ so that they can have sunlight. But before he can complete the ritual, the ‘god’ Marast is killed by an attacker.

Claiming that he only wishes to free the people, not guide nor rule them, he leaves.

Returning to our rag tag team, we learn that the Guardian who first learnt of Kyle’s experience beyond the source wall is still there, searching while the rest have left. Kyle is still troubled by the events on the ‘future perfect’ planet.

One of the Guardians lead the team to the planet Kalosa, a seemingly backward and unremarkable planet but with future potential.

Apparently, a new religious sect called the Light and the Fire have set up base here and they have been moving from planet to planet creating a peaceful non-violent empire.  But Kyle and the rest find themselves quickly in the middle of a war (with giant caterpillars, no less!).

An acolyte of the ‘god’ of that planet, Kaland’r, arrives and tells Kyle not to escalate the violence. Sister Kala (yes, that’s her name) says the battle is an ideological one – the elite military feel threatened and so, are attempting to cast out those who follow the goddess. Kyle uses compassion as a last resort and is barely able to stop them.

The city is in flames but before Kyle can do anything, a fireball like figure moves through the place and douses the flames. Kala says it is Kaland’r the goddess.

In space sector 170, another of those mysterious ‘god-killers’ kills another of the so-called ‘gods’. Another arrives with news that ‘she’ has been found and interestingly he calls her’ destroyer of worlds’, leaving both organizations (the ‘gods’ and the ‘godkillers’) on ambiguous grounds. They leave to find her (most likely Kaland’r) with the rest of their army.

SPOILERS END………….

New Guardians is putting up very interesting questions and this result in Kyle being put through the grind. His position as the only White Lantern has him in a unique position and he sees how power corrupts everywhere in the galaxy.

It seems likely we’ll find out what Kyle learnt beyond the Source Wall soon, especially with all this God talk. Jordan is crafting an interesting storyline and while it does feel a slowburn, hopefully by the next issue, we’ll have a clearer understanding of where Kyle needs to stand.

So, I give it 8.0 out of 10

+Some interesting conundrums
+Art complements the writing very well
+Creates an interesting premise for the arc

-Bit of a slowburn
