Black Canary and Superman finally confront each other, while
Gantlet decides to reveal himself for the god level creature he has always
been.
Tom Taylor continues his excellent juggling act, helped by a
competent art duo of Derenick and Millar.
SPOILERS FOLLOW…………
Gantlet has never been more badass.
That was the impression I got from this issue, despite the
massive showdown between two ‘birds’ (It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…. and one
of the Birds of Prey and named after a bird) and the awesome cliffhanger.
In recent years, the Guardians of Oa have been severely
diluted due to their status quo, but in Injustice, Gantlet atleast is still a
boss, handling Superman and Sinestro like a man handles unruly babies.
But I digress. As we saw previously, Hal saves Carol but at
the cost of his position as a Green Lantern, as his conversion to Sinestro’s
puppet is complete by becoming a Fear Lantern.
But Gantlet is least bothered by the fall of one of his
Corps, as he and Guy rejoin the battle in space, with Gantlet stopping Superman
from killing Salaak and they severly injuring him.
This is followed by Black Canary, in Batman’s jet, attacking
Superman. As warned, Superman immediately disintegrates the jet, but not before
Dinah ejects and uses her canary cry is midair, taking herself and Superman
barreling down to the ground.
We also catch up with a recovering Oracle as she tries to
get past her father’s apparent demise last issue, while Huntress and Batwoman
continue the aircraft borrowing they were assigned to do.
Black Canary and Superman are both alive, though Clark is on the verge of breaking down. A glimpse of the
good person he once was shines out as he tries to apologize for Oliver Queen’s
death, but bringing up Lois changing that in a second.
But Dinah is ready for him, as before he can react, a
kryptonite bullet is lodged in his chest – though as promised to Batman, she
avoids any fatal regions.
Gantlet meanwhile continues his badass streak in Earth’s
space, as he disintegrates most of the Sinestro Corps and is able to take out
Shazam (that moment when Billy was about to call down the lightning and Gantlet
quickly pressed his finger on Billy’s lips going ‘shhh…’ before taking him out
was classic!), resulting in Superman’s army depleting faster and faster.
Dinah herself gloats that the Justice League are out of
commission (with Harley playing psycho pysch to a restrained Flash, with a
Superman shock puppet).
But even as she is distracted by calling Guy, a Sinestro
Corps ring finds it’s way to Superman.
What happens next is so sudden, awesome and sad at the same
time, I needed to read twice to take it all in.
Superman accepts the Sinestro Corps ring, pulls out the
bullet with a created pincer, and in one motion, manages to hit Black Canary
straight in the stomach with his heat vision.
Even as the light goes out of Dinah’s eyes (you’re with
Oliver now, pretty bird), we see something out of our worst nightmares –
Superman in full Sinestro Corpsman wear.
R-uh Oh.
SPOILERS END………………
Tom Taylor manages to balance emotional moments and all-out
action perfectly (yet again!), though at times, it feels like he’s rushing to
meet a deadline.
Still, even in this compacted form, the emotional
roller-coaster is still a delight and Tom Derenick and Mark Millar prove
competent in the absence of Redondo.
Can’t wait for the year finale, yet dreading what may come.
So, I give it 9.0 out of 10.
+Some great character moments
+Hits the right emotional beats
+The action scenes are fluid
+Some great artwork from the dual artists
+The cliffhanger, oh my god, the cliffhanger!
-Feels a little rushed
