The Amazing Spider-Man #12 Review

Tweaking destiny.

The cast keeps on expanding even as it seems hopeless to struggle further. The Spider gang seems to need every help they can get, and the Weaver seems to be their only chance.

As much as I liked Coipel, Guiseppe Camuncoli seems to have been born to draw the Spider Universe.

SPOILERS FOLLOW……………..

Morlun manages to take Benny away despite his sister’s best efforts, while Solus the Elder continues to prey on the Spiders, taking out Spider Lizard and Spider Knight.

But Spider-Man brings reinforcements, including a Power Ranger inspired one who manages to keep Solus at bay. The robot is lost, but it’s host manages to escape alongwith the other Spiders to another Jurrasic style universe.

As seen in Spider-Woman #2, Silk manages to find an universe where the Inheritors cannot tread due to radiation though it is more bearable (but lethal) to the Spiders.

Also, Spider-Woman aka Jessica Drew is undercover as a hand maiden for the Inheritors – apparently thanks to a doppelganger in the Inheritor universe who she took out. But the Weaver mentions that he altered reality to make that exchange possible, and gives Jessica some important scrolls.

She sends them to Peter just as Morlun and Solus arrive.

Peter catches up with all of them, as we see Miguel and Lady Spider operating on Daemos’ corpse, Spider-Woman as above and Miles on a bizarre team-up mission (was that a Spider-Horse?) but are interrupted by Jennix, the scholar Inheritor, who has been listening all along.

Lady Verna and her pets arrive and the fight takes place with casualties, before Silk informs them that she’s found a new base.

We see the radioactive world and following Silk’s elaborate directions, they reach Ezekiel’s base for Inheritor protection where they meet the newest recruit – Uncle Ben.

Say Whatttttt????

One thing you cannot accuse Slott of is shying away from the ridiculous aspects of Peter’s world. We saw a Spider-Horse, a talking Spider Car and a black and white small Japanese Spider-Man, not to mention Power Ranger Spidey!

But by including so many side-missions, the focus seems to be disrupted to the point where the coherency is being lost. Catching up involves lot of panels without context and this is one event where the tie-ins need to be read to fully understand the plot.

SPOILERS END………………..

The frantic battle continues, as every time the Spider resistance appears to have the upper hand, they are proved otherwise.

There are some intriguing ideas thrown out here (one of which seems a cheap out), and overall combined with an exceptional art display, continues the forward momentum of this event.

So, I give it 8.5 out of 10.

+Excellent forward momentum
+Great imagery
+Some great character moments
+Intriguing ideas
+Tie-ins made to be important

-One reveal felt like a cheap out
-Unnecessary catching up with some of the tie-ins
