Green Lantern #33 Review

Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

The Green Lanterns try to hold off the Durlans as they initiate the final phase of their plans.

Vendetti continues to explore the planet of Zezzen even as the Green Lanterns stage their last stand. He gives some great character moments even as the battle rages on.

Tan though falters here, especially when showing faces sideways.

SPOILERS FOLLOW…………….

On Zezzen, the Durlans give one of the Ancients the severed hand of a Daxamite, but before they can initiate their plans, the Green Lanterns led by Hal Jordan arrive.

John and the rest are still too far away to join up but give Hal’s group the heads up, leading to some drastic measures kicking in.

But before going into that, the Durlans have been a severely underwhelming foe. While their physiology and sneaky nature have been refreshing from other recent Lantern foes, they have been inconsistent throughout.

They had plans for infiltration and for betrayal, but falter when it comes to actual action. During the time it took Hal’s group to arrive, the Durlans could have easily completed their plans if they didn’t stand around admiring their own handiwork so far.

Anyway, Vendetti brings us a nice lighthearted moment here as two young Zezzites and Hal have a fun conversation, leading to them learning about the Green Lantern human from ‘erf’.

It’s a nice moment in an otherwise ‘dim’ situation.

Hal’s group put up a wall around the main lake, forcing the Durlans to attack. Even as the Durlans manage to create cracks and holes, cavalry arrives.

Mogo starts showering the Durlan side with meteorites before the outer clans, lead by Non-Anj, arrives.

The Durlans efforts have resulted in the irony that they have made lethal enemies of those they fought alongside to bring an end to the Lanterns.

All this results in the Durlans being hopelessly overpowered and outmaneuvered as the Lanterns take them captive.

John Stewart’s group finally arrives as Fatality makes acquaintance with the young Zezzites. But after Hal takes the Durlans and puts them in the cells, John responds with some troubling news from Zezzen before he is cut off.

It’s not over.

It isn't a stretch to think that Zezzen may be the fatality in this war in some manner thanks to some Durlans machinisms, but fingers crossed for something great next week.

SPOILERS END…………

Vendetti fashioned this as a slightly generic final battle but with a twist in the end it seems.

Even considering that, this issue didn’t live up to the promise of the buildup, as decisions proved incredibly convenient and not natural in the pivotal moments.

I do know there’s something bigger coming down the way, but still this issue left me a little disappointed.

So, I give it 7.5 out of 10.

+Good character moments
+Some lighthearted dialogue
+Excellent imagery

-Faces came off wrong sometimes
-Slightly generic battle
-Incredibly convenient decisions
