Injustice Gods Among Us Year Three #6 Review

My choice of allies...................

Batman and the resistance got a temporary but satisfying win while the Spectre mystery continues to claim its share of occult members.

First off, I’m really sad that Tom Taylor has left the title. Being his baby, Tom played a pivotal role in molding the Injustice world – and his blend of classic DC with a dark Elseworld twist made it so enjoyable.

I hope Brian Buccellato can continue this, given his runs on Flash and Detective have been very enjoyable.

The artwork is enjoyable, as Redondo plays a bigger part and most of the group are at the top of their game.

SPOILERS FOLLOW.............................

Detective Chimp is back up and about as we learn that Constantine and his team was heavily involved in Wonder Woman’s mysterious coma – and it may be waning. John has one more left and it needs to be used well.

But first, they discuss Xanadu’s mysterious omens, among which most have already come true by the end of this issue. ‘The green will grow’ points to Swamp Thing getting involved in the battle, ‘hellfire will burn’ describes Etrigan’s involvement, ‘A dead man will fall, and a dead man will rise’ was seen last issue as the deceased Nightwing took Boston Brand’s place as Deadman while ‘souls will be lost’ described Ragman’s demise.

‘And traitors triumphant’ is yet to occur though the ‘Empress awakens’ portends to Diana getting involved again while ‘Emperor sleeps’ points to Superman now in a similar coma.

Wonder Woman has been a sore point for this series given her extreme one-dimensional character work, which made her look like a full on villain during Year One – so I hope Buccellato can give her some depth.

For the last prophecy to come true, Etrigan has to be recruited and a host is chosen (though I wonder who John is referring to?) for the demon. He lays waste to the Hall of Justice, leaving Sinestro and Hal Jordan fleeing. The fact that Superman still cares for his allies is reassuring, but his twisted world view comes out when he sees that the host is Batman.

For an association with a Hell demon like Etrigan, one has to exchange places will him in Hell for his presence in the mortal realm – and the fact that Batman is willing points to the extreme seriousness of the situation.

The fact that Superman cannot recognize the real demons (Sinestro) from the physical ones is really depressing, as is Batman’s hope that Clark dreams of being a better person when the potion takes effect and he falls into a magical coma.

Meanwhile, Phantom Stranger seemingly becomes the next casualty of the Spectre.

This is disappointing given I thought only him or God were powerful enough to stop him, but I’m growing more curious as to the identity of the Spectre’s host – it doesn’t seem to be Joker, but someone more powerful given his knowledge of the Stranger’s real identity.

Through I really hope Tom knows what he’s doing with their omnipotent figures. The Stranger is supposed to be immortal unless the ‘Presence’/God allow it. So, is God allowing the Spectre’s actions? That would make stopping the Spectre an impossible task.

But seriously, how cool was the round table scene? And Chimp sporting a pirate patch? And a correct cover for once?

SPOILERS END....................

For once, the Resistance get a win and it feels good. There are some great scenes both visually and characterwise, with Tom using his knowledge of the DC universe to great effect.

The Spectre though remains a sore point and unless a proper explanation of his actions is forthcoming, things would remain problematic.

So, I give it 9.0 out of 10.

+Some great character moments

+Visually awesome

+The ending

-Spectre remains a sore point
