Leading from the front.
The main Spider-Verse event has been divided into two
groups, and this is the issue where they collide.
Slott manages to make the major characters work – but it
feels cluttered and a little rushed.
Balancing a fast paced plot alongside such an enormous cast
is always going to be a tall order, but there are enough character moments here
to make this an enjoyable ride.
Coipel falters a bit and most of his faces are out of wack,
but is serviceable.
SPOILERS FOLLOW………….
Superior Spider-Man’s team arrives and manages to kill Lady
Verna’s pets quickly and brutally, managing to rescue Miles and Jessica of the
Ultimate universe.
616 Peter’s group divides into three teams and brings up
some interesting moments – Peter’s reluctance to let Spider-Gwen go onto the
field, Old Man Spider’s forbidding of Silk’s traversal and Cosmic Spider-man
brother-like behavior regarding Mayday.
Spider-UK’s team joins up with the Superior
one – and Peter gets the shock of his life when he sees SpOck up and about (and
arrogant). Old Man Spider is annoyed that Silk tailed them, while Miguel is
happy to see that he’s back in his timeline.
But the blissful moments are broken when Daemos attacks and
the first victim is RoboSpider. Kaine’s ‘Other’ abilities and SpOck’s ruthlessness
manage to fell him.
More problems lie ahead as Daemos is resurrected and breaks
Old Man Spider’s neck, coming with two of his siblings.
Ben Reilly and Kaine determine that the Inheritors are using
cloning technology to resurrect themselves and along with Ultimate Jessica Drew
decide to go to the source and stop the process. Likewise, Silk also escapes
with a dimension porter while Peter is distracted by learning that Old Man Spider
is actually an alternate world Ezekiel.
The terms ‘Scion’, ‘Other’ and ‘Bride’ come up again during
the Peter-Ezekiel talk, but we’re no closer to knowing what they mean.
Silk is followed by Spider-Man Noir and 616 Spider-Woman
with the siblings and Daemos hot on their heels. Once back at the Cosmic
Universe, SpOck takes charge and Peter’s spider sense starts going haywire.
SPOILERS END…………
A little rushed and uneven, but overly enjoyable. The large
ensemble gives room for only fleeting character interactions, but most hit the
right mark.
The main thing is that Peter can see every direction his
life could have gone – and it makes many of his discoveries interesting in ways
that are not easy to guess.
The artwork falls off badly and proves a little detrimental,
given the large scope of the event.
So, I give it 7.5 out of 10.
+Some great action
+Impressively used character interactions
+The ‘What if’ scenario being used well
-Artwork suffers badly
-Plot feels rushed
I kind of getting sick of this event:(
