Green Lantern Corps #29 Review

Which side are you on?

Daggle takes center stage as the lull in the war continues with important pieces being shifted, as the Corps gains new allies and enemies.

Jensen gives a good character portrait for Daggle but it feels he has stiffed the momentum of the annual.

Chang’s pencils are impressive for the most part

SPOILERS FOLLOW………….

The Durlans have come for Daggle, the renegade Green Lantern shape-shifting Durlan. John’s team faces off against the Durlans as Daggle continues to juggle the pros and cons of choosing sides.

As Bolphunga charges forward, John lets Daggle go so that he can make his own choice. Daggle wants to stay out of this war but is cornered by the Durlans.

While Hunter Dog takes care of the pursuing Durlans, John makes a final offer to Daggle – pick their side and when the war’s over, he can leave. In turn, the Corps will help Daggle search for a long-lost comrade.

Daggle apparently betrays John but no sooner are the Durlan backs turned, he turns on them. Daggle agrees to a truce provided Hunter Dog helps in their pursuit for his fellow Corpse team-mate.

On Mogo, Arisia and Kilowog continue training the new recruits and we get some good moments from Jruk as he battles and loses to Hannu in simple combat.

Elsewhere, Lantern Iolande, the black market dealer Loragg and Lantern Hwaal reach the Shadow Market in Sector 3189 looking for Soranik Natu. But Hwaal’s aggressive actions put the head honcho on course to join hands with the Khund. We learn Hwaal has been imprisoned and replaced by the Durlans, as have others.

SPOILERS END………………..

The Durlan War seems to have reached a standstill as new members join both sides.

While it is impressive that long forgotten Lanterns are being spotlighted, the filler tone is hard to suppress. Unless there’s a big payoff later down the line, Daggle’s 2-part story seemed unnecessarily stretched out.

This event seems to already overstay its welcome but the character moments throw some positive light on an otherwise by-the-numbers story.

So, I give it 7.0 out of 10

+Some good character moments
+Nice work by Bernard Chang
+Jensen shows good understanding of obscure Lanterns

-Meanders too much
-Plot has come to a standstill
