Justice League of America #10 Review

Stargirl must juggle her past and present to stay alive.

Well, this was probably my third origin based review, but what kept it from falling into the same trap as Justice League #25 was that this made me really like Stargirl, someone whom I've not has any experience with pre-New 52 (except for the crossovers).

The battle with the Secret Society takes a backseat in this issue as we deal with Courtney's problems in being both a super-hero, a daughter and a teen.

Kindt continues to build the Stargirl - Martian Manhunter dynamic as the plot slows down to allow some self reflection.

SPOILERS FOLLOW......................

J'onn is trapped in Courtney's head and as the latter stays trapped in her past, J'onn tries to bring her back to the present where the Society is attacking them.

After her first exposure to super-heroics, Courtney remains immersed in her memories of first trying to adjust to her new powers while J'onn pleads for her to snap out of it. She then remembers her first search for a proper outfit with her friend, then her stepdad finding out and promising to train her.

Coming back to the present, Manhunter is able to use Stargirl's body to repel Blockbuster and slowly Stargirl regains her consciousness. Then she uses her powers to escape the villains.

Gazing over a destroyed LA, Stargirl and J'onn differ on their actions. While Courtney wants to see to her family, J'onn wants to help the League. We see Courtney as the scared teen who feels she's not suited for the world of superheroes, and J'onn as the seasoned warrior who has forgotten what family was.

Courtney is finally able to release Martian Manhunter from her head and they go their separate ways. J'onn learns a terrible truth - the Firestorm matrix is counting down and the heroes may not be prisoners for too long!

They'll be dead.

SPOILERS END.............................................

Kindt continues to explore Courtney's origins and contrast her with J'onn. While this makes an interesting dynamic, the slow pace makes me question whether this was required now.

But it is entertaining none the less and I look forward to them taking the fight to the Secret Society.

So, I give it 7.0 out of 10

+Stargirl's backstory is well rounded
+Stargirl-Martian Manhunter dynamic is well handled

-Slow Pace
-Was this the right time to showcase Stargirl's origins
