Things escalate as Hal is cornered.
The theme of ‘might doesn’t make right’ is apparently the overlaying
one of this arc. Things have been blurry ever since the end of Lights Out and
before that, the Third Army.
Vendetti both plants seeds for future events and shows how
the Guardians madness has left the Green Lantern Corps isolated. Once revered,
they are now despised across the universe. And nowhere is that more prevalent
than in the current scenario.
With vibrant colors, this book is a great looking canvas compilation,
and deserves to be in a Green Lantern book.
SPOILERS FOLLOW…………………….
When we last left Hal, he and Kilowog had reached Dekann to
apprehend Nol-Anj, the leader of the drug trafficking clan the Braidmen. Things
have gotten completed since she got a star sapphire ring (thanks to her twisted
love for her clan).
Cornered on all sides, Hal and Kilowog are beaten back and out-numbered.
This leads to an unprecedented call to all Lanterns on Mogo. This leads to some
great character moments from familiar faces.
Vath is a soldier to the core and resents Graf and the
others for relinquishing the use of the rings. But when push comes to shove,
Graf saves Vath and the latter is grateful.
But one of the most enlightening quotes comes from Hal
himself. He’s been right-slinging for so long (as has most of the Corps) that
creating elaborate constructs has become second nature to him. Curbing it to
save light won’t do, because that would go against his natural instinct.
The entire Corps beats back the Braidmen but the tide keeps
on coming. This helps understand why Nol-Anj is so powerful. The love may be
twisted but it isn’t false and one-sided.
This leads to an impasse as Nol-Anj gives up the ring while
staying on Dekaan while some Braidmen are imprisoned. You can feel Nol-Anj
giving the ring back on purpose as she knows that the rings are now seen as
weapons destroying the universe bit by bit.
On the sidelines, the Durlans plan an invasion against the
Lantern Corps.
SPOILERS END……………………
With a great moral crisis at the center, we get some great
character moments and a plot that is slowly finding its footing.
The art is exceptional as well and complement the story,
especially in the broader strokes.
So, I give it 9.0 out of 10.
+The theme is wonderfully illustrated
+Some great character moments from Vath and Graf
+Great visuals
-The story is mostly setup and thus, feels like a slow burn
