Justice League of America #11 Review

I spy with my little eye……………

As J’onn and Stargirl are separated, circumstances ensure that they must co-operate. But there’s an enemy following them.

Matt Kindt brings the Martian Manhunter to Gotham and continues to explore the contrasting pasts of J’onn and Stargirl. While the Stargirl thing seems to have overstayed its welcome, J’onn is getting a welcome addition to his New 52 Rogues Gallery.

The art remains as it always has been – mostly consistent and sometimes patchy. The plot though doesn’t move that forward and this arc continues to feel like it is going through the motions instead of crafting a solid story.

SPOILERS FOLLOW………………

J’onn finds himself depleted and face to face with an out-of-control Clayface in Gotham. Derenick or Barrows (no page number is given unlike the other titles when separate artists have the page numbers given) draws a mean Clayface, who looks as twisted and disfigured as he is inside.

As Stargirl manages to save J’onn in the nick of time, someone is watching them from close. Getting out of Gotham, they reach Denver, where apparently things are really bad.

It appears from the witnesses running out that Shazam (or Black Adam, considering Shazam should still be inside Firestorm. Still can’t understand the Shazam-Black Adam dilemma) is running amok while a giant robot is destroying the city.

Stargirl recollects he foiling a hostage situation as she sees J’onn calming the panicky citizens. She manages to destroy the robot’s leg. As the robot falls, Courtney feels the whole thing was strange and as she and J’onn make haste, they are attacked by Despero.

Despero first knocks down Martian Manhunter and then plunges Stargirl into the icy waters. Stargirl’s world goes black as she fights Despero’s hold.

Some thoughts. This Gotham is probably the most frightening depiction in recent times. It feels as bleak and dangerous as it should have in Arkham War (and isn’t) while Rogues Rebellion’s one is a twisted Wonderland with humorous shades. Clayface is one mean cookie here.

Despero becoming part of J’onn’s Rogues (as seen before in Justice League) is welcome. Both are powerful alien telepaths but have very different objectives. I’m looking forward to seeing them battle again.

SPOILERS END……………………..

While the plot meanders with unwanted backstory thrown in, some elements are too good to miss on. J’onn is as captivating as always while Stargirl is slowly growing on me.

The art is par for the course, with nothing standing out. There does seem to be some plot inconsistencies though, and I hope those are straightened out or explained.

So, I give it 6.0 out of 10

+Some good J'onn moments
+Interesting antagonist intoduced
+Art is good

-Plot meanders too much
-Stargirl given unneeded backstory
-Some plot inconsistencies
